The Package Manger allows you to search, install, and remove packages; add, and modify repositories; and create and remove boot environments.</para>

+<para>Perform the following steps to install a package:</para>
+<orderedlist><listitem><para>In the main window of the <application>Package Manager</application>, click the <guibutton>Reload</guibutton> button in order to view the latest list of the packages available to you.</para>

+<listitem><para>Check the box next to the package to select it.</para>
+</listitem>
+<listitem><para>Click on <guibutton>Install/Update</guibutton> in the toolbar to start the package installation process.</para>

+<listitem><para>The Package Manager checks for dependencies. Click <emphasis>Show Details</emphasis> to view the details.</para>

+<para>Type the name of the package you want to search for in the <guilabel>Search</guilabel> box.</para>

+<para>Use the submenus under the <guimenu>Edit</guimenu> menu to cut, copy, paste, or clear text in the Search tab.</para>

+<sect1 id="ghmzc"><title>Update a Package</title>
+<para>Look for the green icon next to the installed package name. This icon indicates that updates are available for the package in the currently selected repository. Select the package and click on the <guibutton>Install/Update</guibutton> button to install the latest version of the package.</para>
+</sect1>
+<sect1 id="ghmym"><title>Switch Between Configured Repositories</title>
+<para>Use the <guilabel>Repositories</guilabel> drop-down menu on the toolbar to view a list of configured repositories. Click on a repository name to switch to a different repository.</para>

+<sect1 id="ghmyp"><title>Update the Current Image (Update All Packages)</title>
+<para>Perform the following steps to update your entire image :</para>
+<orderedlist><listitem><para>Click <guimenu>File</guimenu> <guimenuitem>Update All</guimenuitem> or the <guilabel>Update All</guilabel> button to start the process of updating <emphasis role="strong">all</emphasis> the packages in your image.</para>
+<note><para>The <guilabel>Update All</guilabel> button is enabled when updates are available to the installed packages.</para>
+</note>

+<listitem><para>The <guilabel>Update All Confirmation</guilabel> dialog box is displayed.</para>
+<para>During the <emphasis>Update All</emphasis> process, a clone of the active boot environment is created. This clone enables the user to <emphasis>rollback</emphasis> the system to the current boot environment if the Update All process fails to complete or if it or corrupts the system.</para>
+</listitem>
+<listitem><para>Enter a name for the new boot environment clone that will be created.</para>
+<note><para>It is recommended that users enter meaningful names for the boot environment clone. For example, <emphasis>OpenSolaris_11/15/08</emphasis> , clearly shows that the boot environment clone is a clone of the OpenSolaris OS and was created on <literal>11/15/08</literal>.</para>

+<listitem><para>Click <guibutton>Proceed</guibutton> to continue the <emphasis>Update All</emphasis> process.</para>
+<para>Click <guibutton>Cancel</guibutton> to cancel the process. No changes are made to the boot environment and the you are returned to the main window of the <application>Package Manager</application>.</para>

+<sect2 id="ghmyd"><title>Update All Errors</title>
+<para>A new boot environment clone <emphasis role="strong">must</emphasis> be created for the Update All process to be completed. An error message is displayed if a boot environment clone cannot be created. You may see the following error message dialog box:</para>
+<para><literal>Not enough disk space: the Update All action cannot be performed. You may choose to return BE Management to manage your boot environments and free up disk space</literal>.</para>
+<para>Perform the following steps if you wish to rectify the error and continue with the Update All process: </para>
+<orderedlist><listitem><para>Click <guibutton>BE Management</guibutton> to go to the BE Management dialog box.</para>
+</listitem>
+<listitem><para>Follow the steps listed in <xref linkend="ghlik"/> to delete old or unused boot environments and free up disk space.</para>

+<listitem><para>After you have rebooted your system, click the <guilabel>Update All</guilabel> icon to restart the process of updating all packages.</para>

+<sect1 id="ghmya"><title>Manage Boot Environments</title>
+<para>For an OpenSolaris release, a boot environment is an instance of a bootable OpenSolaris environment. The boot environment consists of a root file system and, optionally, other file systems, such as <filename>/usr</filename>, <filename>/var</filename>, or <filename>/export</filename>. These other file systems are mounted below the root file system. The root file system and all other file systems of the boot environment that contain system software are required to be zfs datasets.</para>
+<para>An active boot environment is the one that is currently booted. Exactly one active boot environment can be booted. An inactive boot environment is not currently booted, but can be in a state of waiting for activation on the next reboot.</para>

+<para>Perform the following steps to manage your Boot Environments (BE):</para>

+<listitem><para>Select the checkbox next to the boot environment you want to delete.</para>

+<para>Click <guibutton>Reset</guibutton> to revert the changes to the opening state.</para>

+<listitem><para>If you clicked OK , the BE Management Confirmation dialog box is displayed. Review the changes to the boot environment and click <guibutton>OK</guibutton> to proceed.</para>

+<para>Perform the following steps to add, remove, or configure repositories:</para>

+<listitem><para>The <literal>Manage Repositories</literal> dialog box is displayed. The following actions can be performed in this dialog box:</para>
+<orderedlist><listitem><para><emphasis role="strong">Add a Repository</emphasis> – To add a new repository, enter the name and the address (URL) of the repository. Click <guibutton>Add</guibutton>.</para>

+<listitem><para><emphasis role="strong">Remove a Repository</emphasis> – To remove a repository, click on a repository name from the list to select it. Click <guibutton>Remove</guibutton>.</para>
+<note><para>A repository that has been set as preferred repository cannot be removed. To remove a preferred repository, set a non-preferred repository as preferred, and then remove the repository.</para>

+<listitem><para><emphasis role="strong">Set a Preferred Repository</emphasis></para>
+<para>A preferred repository is the default repository where the source for the packages are downloaded from. </para>
+<para>To set a repository as a preferred repository, click the radio button next to the repository you would like to set as preferred repository. Click <guibutton>Close</guibutton> if you are not making any other changes to the repository information.</para>

+<listitem><para><emphasis role="strong">Modify a Repository</emphasis> – Perform the following steps to modify a repository :</para>
+<orderedlist><listitem><para>Select the repository you want to modify.</para>

+<listitem><para>Click the <guibutton>Modify</guibutton> button. The <literal>Modify Repository</literal> dialog box is displayed.</para>

+<listitem><para>Type a valid name for the repository and the URL of the repository. A repository name is considered valid if it does not exist in the current list of repositories.</para>
